Victoria Tsurutis, the 2009 champion, shot an opening-round 72 Friday to take the first-round lead in the 2014 Charleston Ladies City Amateur golf championship being played at Municipal Golf Course.
Tsurutis holds a two-stroke lead over Savannah Hallman, a former Wando golfer headed to Charleston Southern. Ansley Vaughn, who now plays for Converse, is third at 75 while 13-time winner Lea Anne Brown opened with a 76. Defending champion Colleen Estes opened with a 77.
The tournament concludes Saturday. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. with the leaders scheduled to start at 9:50 a.m.
Tsurutis, who beat Brown in a two-hole playoff to win the 2009 tournament, managed to avoid any big numbers. She made one birdie and one bogey on the front nine while her back nine included two birdies and two bogeys.
Hallman made only one birdied while recording three bogeys. Vaughan had two birdies, one bogey and a disastrous quadruple bogey on the par-3 11th hole. But she recovered and parred in.
