2014 Ladies City Amateur
Where: Charleston Municipal Golf Course
Tee times: 8-9:40 a.m.
Defending champion: Colleen Estes.
There are a lot of players who have won championships at Charleston Municipal Golf Course among the 36 competitors for the 2014 Ladies City Amateur golf championship that begins Friday.
"Our participation is up this year," Municipal general manager Marshall Ormand said of the 36-hole tournament that will wrap up Saturday.
"We've done several things over the last couple of years trying to build the numbers. We've made it a two-day event instead of three days and try to get at least one day on the weekend. Any year we've had the tournament we've had between 25 and 40 players. We try to structure it where it works out for everyone."
The first threesome off at 8 a.m. Friday accounts for 15 Ladies City Amateur titles - defending champion Colleen Estes, 2009 winner Victoria Tsurutis and 13-time champion Lea Anne Brown. Brown, a member of the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame, won the event nine straight years and last won it in 2008.
Estes, a former East Carolina golfer, beat Tsurutis by five shots to win the 2013 tournament.
Another past champion participating is Lynn McCain, who won in 1998. A trio of former Al Esposito Junior champions will compete in the event for players 18 and older - Amelia Goodwin who plays for The Citadel, Elizabeth Thompson who plays for Wofford and Ansley Vaughan who plays for Converse.
