The Berkeley County School Board on Tuesday voted to name the new schools to be built in the Clements Ferry Road area for the late artist and blacksmith Philip Simmons.
Simmons, who died on June 22, 2009, was born on Daniel Island on June 9, 1912.
A school naming committee of district officials and other representatives recommended that the board name the elementary, middle and high schools for Simmons.
The middle school is scheduled to open in August 2016 and later expand to include elementary grades, and the high school is set to open in August 2017.
