Charleston residents will have a chance to voice their concerns about how the city handles the robust tourism industry on the peninsula Thursday night.
A public forum on tourism-related issues will be held for the second time this year at 6 p.m. at the Charleston Museum at 360 Meeting St.
The city announced a few weeks ago at the last Tourism Advisory Council meeting that the tourism industry would essentially be put on pause until the city-appointed advisory council had a chance to review how tourism-related businesses are regulated.
For the time being, no new special events or tour guide businesses will be issued permits to operate on the peninsula.
Also, while the council considers new tourism laws, the city is ramping up enforcement to make sure the regulations already on the books are being obeyed. Three new tourism enforcement officers will be hired to patrol the areas most affected by visitor-related activities.
The Tourism Advisory Council is made up of tourism and downtown neighborhood representatives who were appointed by the mayor to examine and revise the city's Tourism Management Plan, which hasn't been updated since 1998.
The council's stated mission is to strike a balance between a robust tourism industry and a high quality of life in the residential neighborhoods on the peninsula.
