Former Citadel Bulldog Dan McDonnell has been to the College World Series both as a player and a coach.
But winning a bid to Omaha is always special, as McDonnell showed after his Louisville team earned its second straight CWS berth last weekend.
McDonnell, who played on The Citadel's College World Series team in 1990, had to wipe away tears as he talked about the Cardinals, whom he's led to the CWS three times in eight years.
"I don't want this to be about me," said McDonnell, who played for the late Chal Port and worked for coach Fred Jordan at The Citadel. "I get a lot of praise when we win, but this is about the coaches, the assistants and the players. I'm the one that's blessed. It's uncomfortable when people say I take these kids to Omaha, because I don't. They take me."
Louisville opens the CWS on Saturday against Vanderbilt.
