Area ice cream lovers know pints of Jeni's ice cream already are available at Caviar & Bananas, Southern Season, Earth Fare and Mixson Market. But until the Columbus, Ohio-based company last week opened a King Street retail shop, it wasn't possible to locally buy a cup of Goat Cheese with Red Cherries - perhaps with a dollop of salted caramel topping.
"When you come into our store, it's not just in and out with your ice cream cone," founder Jeni Britton Bauer told The Post and Courier earlier this year. "It's hopefully a longer experience. I think of our stores almost like showrooms."
Jeni's also offers its 15-20 ice cream flavors, evenly split between signature varieties and rotating specials, in waffle cones and sandwiched between macaroon cookies. (Insider tip: Make a beeline for the Yazoo Sue if it's in the cooler.)
According to a press release, the Charleston scoop shop, the 17th Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams store nationwide, features standing room for 75 patrons. That's important, since the 25 seats are bound to be snapped up quickly: Time magazine in 2011 named Jeni's ice creams "the best in America." Located at 499 King St., Jeni's is open daily from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. For more information, visit jenis.com or call 212-5113.
