The rural roadway straightens for a mile past fields and woods, then turns to gravel. Just ahead stands a stately house with huge porches and manicured lawn.

If that sounds like the country, then sure enough it is: The 3,061-square-foot manor was built as a farmhouse in 1918.

Yet it's also part of a small, planned neighborhood. An eight-acre tract stretching south to the Wadmalaw River has been subdivided into six lots.

The close to century-old residence sits on one of those parcels, a 1.41 acre piece providing a wide buffer. Situated at 4640 Westervelt Road in Meggett, the two-story house offers fine views of river and marsh.

"Inside you feel like south of Broad but with deep water," says Delicia Deen, a Realtor with Marshall She is listing agent for 4640 Westervelt Road, which is for sale for $1,175,000.

"It's so peaceful and serene," Mike Hawkins says. The local physician and his wife own the three-bedroom, three-bath home with master suite downstairs. Orange, peach and pecan trees grow on the property, he says. In its farming days, the property had a pecan grove, Deen notes. The land also encompasses ancient live oaks, azaleas, magnolias and crepe myrtles.

"As you arrive, the grandeur of this estate really sets in," Deen says in her listing.

Charleston area designer Beau Clowney carefully restored the house in a $500,000 project in 2007, preserving much of the Victorian style such as original hardwood floors, three fireplaces, butler's pantry, even the front door bell. At the same time, the house boasts modern upgrades such as new electrical wiring and plumbing; and two heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

The residence sports ceilings rising up to 14 feet on the first level and 10 feet on the top floor. A coffered ceiling with "gorgeous" light fixture highlights the grand foyer, she says. Next to the foyer sets a sitting room with gas-burning fireplace and oversized windows to let lots of light in, she says. Detailed woodwork on the walls marks the spacious dining room.

A main hall connects the foyer to the kitchen and main living area.

Spotlighting the master bedroom are three good-sized closets and a "storage cubby," she says. The bathroom, meanwhile, showcases a Jacuzzi tub, marble vanity with dual sinks and tiled shower with glass enclosure, Deen says in her listing.

A mahogany stairwell graces the approach to the second floor, which touts two similar-sized bedrooms possessing plenty of windows. There's a surround sound system with speakers built into every room in the house.

Deen says the south side of the house provides "stunning views" of oaks, marsh and Wadmalaw Sound, which doubles as the Intracoastal Waterway. New tongue-and-groove cypress floors distinguish the wraparound porches.

An easement runs from 4640 Westervelt Road to a shared, riverside dock and private floater, she says.

"This is such a unique property," Deen says, that it will take a specific buyer. At the same time, "We've had a lot of interest," she says.

The former farmhouse may seem far out but it's really just a few minutes from Savannah Highway. "A couple of years ago, Stono Ferry (in Hollywood) seemed far out," she points out.

Cooling winds off the water are another, not-so-visible feature. Noting that the porches are good for entertaining, Deen remarked on the property's setting as "so peaceful. And," she says, "you always have that breeze."

The house is at the end of Westervelt in a six-lot neighborhood. Traveling west, take Savannah Highway and make a left on S.C. Highway 162 toward Hollywood. Travel six miles and turn left on Gibson Road. Follow Gibson to Church Flats Road and take a left. Almost immediately, make a right on Westervelt Road. Go a mile. At the end of the road to the right is 4640 Westervelt Road.
