SEABROOK ISLAND - Bluffton's Brian Langley and Bradley Kauffman of Greer will meet Sunday for the 42nd annual South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Seabrook Island Club's Ocean Course.
Langley, the medalist who just finished at USC Beaufort, ousted Mount Pleasant's Andrew Novak, 1-up, in Saturday's quarterfinals and then beat J.D. Hoft, 2 and 1, in the semifinals of the Carolinas Golf Association tournament.
Kaufmann, a rising sophomore at Winthrop, beat Bryce Howell of Blythewood, 2 and 1, in the quarterfinals and advanced with a 5 and 4 semifinal victory over Alex Finke of Rock Hill.
Sunday's championship is an 18-hole match scheduled to start at 8 a.m.
"I haven't made it easy on myself, that's for sure. I've played some great players. It's exhausting but I'm having a great time," said Langley, who birdied 18 from 20 feet to clinch his win over Novak and made a 10-foot birdie putt on 17 to close out Hoft.
Langley beat Finke in a one-hole playoff to earn medalist honors and all four of his matches thus far have gone at least 17 holes.
"I'm putting the ball in play. That's the main objective on this course to get the ball in play off the tee. My iron play is solid and I've made the putts I've needed."
Novak was 2-up after winning the first and fourth holes with pars, but Langley squared the match with a par on No. 11 and birdie on No. 12. Novak won the par-5 16th with a birdie to go 1-up, but Langley won 17 with a par and clinched his berth in the semifinals with the birdie on 18.
Kauffman, who was the No. 11 seed after qualifying, has had an easier time. None of his matches have gone to the 18th hole.
"I just played steady golf. A lot of fairways, a lot of greens and two-putts," said Kauffman, who is a rising sophomore at Winthrop.
"Out here par is going to win a lot of holes. That's my goal (Sunday), fairways, greens and two-putts. Pars are pretty valuable. I'm just going to try and go out and have fun."
