Citadel juniors Bo Thompson and Mason Davis both were selected in the MLB Draft on Saturday. Thompson already has made up his mind to sign with the New York Yankees, while Davis is still pondering his future with the Florida Marlins.
As juniors, both could opt to return to The Citadel for their senior baseball seasons.
Taken in the 13th round by the Yankees with overall pick No. 392, Thompson is ready to begin a pro career that could soon see him back in Riley Park, home of the Bulldogs and the Yankees' affiliate Charleston RiverDogs.
"Crazy how that works out," said Thompson, a 5-10, 255-pound first baseman/designated hitter. "I can't wait to get back to Riley Park as quickly as possible."
Thompson, who batted .315 with nine home runs and 42 runs batted-in last season, said he expects a signing bonus of about $60,000 with the Yankees paying for the rest of his education.
"I'm going pro," he said. "It was an extremely tough decision. My heart is at The Citadel, but my dream always has been to play pro ball. My family and I decided today it was best of us if I start my pro career now."
Thompson batted .299 with 14 homers and 52 RBI as a sophomore out of Mauldin.
"My told me I started playing baseball as a Yankee in the youth leagues," he said. "And now I get to start my pro career as a Yankee."
Davis, a slick-fielding second baseman, was taken in the 19th round by the Marlins with pick No. 557. He said Saturday he's not yet made a decision on turning pro, but it seems likely that he will.
"It's a pretty cool feeling," Davis said of being drafted. "I was a little bit nervous. I didn't know when it would happen, but I'm just glad it did."
Davis, a 5-9, 170-pounder from Conyers, Ga., hit .310 this season with 27 stolen bases in 33 attempts, and scored a team-high 45 runs as the Bulldogs' lead-off hitter.
"I'm still working things out with my advisor," he said. "We're still getting some info from the team, and I'll make my decision pretty soon."
