Andrew Novak of Mount Pleasant was the only area golfer to advance into the quarterfinals of the South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship being played at Seabrook Island Club's Ocean Course.
Novak, who just completed his freshman season at Wofford, enjoyed a relatively easy day in the Carolinas Golf Association event, cruising to a 7 and 5 win over Jackson Moore of Isle of Palms in Friday's opening match and then scoring a 5 and 4 win over Doug Ramey of Greer in the Round of 16. The former Academic Magnet standout's margins of victory were the two highest of the 24 matches played Friday.
Against Moore, Novak won five of the first six holes (Moore halved No. 2) for a 5-up advantage. Moore won the eighth but Novak roared back and won 10, 11 and 13 to close the match.
Ramey won the first two holes over Novak in the afternoon match, but Novak moved in front by winning 3, 5 and 6 and went on to win 9, 10, 13 and 14 to earn his spot in the quarterfinals where he will face medalist Bran Langley of Bluffton at 8 a.m. Saturday.
The match play going was a little tougher for Langley, who just completed his senior season at USC Beaufort. Langley beat Taylor Ingle, 2 and 1, in the morning match but took 19 holes to oust Robert Fisher of Johns Island. Langley won the 17th hole for a 1-up advantage but Fisher birdied the18th to send the match to extra holes. Langley won the first hole with a bogey.
Alex Finke of Rock Hill, who lost the playoff for medalist to Langley, also advanced, defeating Joe Davis of Chapin, 1 up, and Hugh Morrison of Charleston, 2 up.
Summerville's Julian Keur, a Charleston Southern signee who finished third in stroke play qualifying, won his morning match, 3-2, over Bill Smunk of Kingstree, but lost in the afternoon to Bryce Howell of Blythewood, 4 and 3.
