A 21-year-old swimmer drowned Friday afternoon in the Tailrace Canal in Moncks Corner.
He was Mathew Gourdine of St. Stephen, Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said.
Dispatch got a call about 3:20 p.m. that a man had jumped into the water under the U.S. Highway 52 Bridge and didn't resurface, Salisbury said.
Berkeley County Rescue Squad, S.C. Department of Natural Resources, the Sheriff's Office and several local fire departments searched the water. The rescue squad recovered the body about 4:20 p.m.
The death was ruled an accidental drowning, Salisbury said.
