Brian Langley was the only player to break par Wednesday during the opening round of qualifying for the South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship being contested at Seabrook Island Club's Ocean Winds course.

Langley, who just finished his senior season at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, managed to scratch out a 2-under-par 70 on the 6,765-yard course designed by Willard Byrd. Johnson Holliday of Aynor, who just completed his freshman season at USC Aiken, was the only player to match par 72. Third is held by Tyler Lucas of Rock Hill, who just completed his sophomore season at Erskine.

Five players shared fourth place at 2-over 74 including Chandler Mulkey of Johns Island and Jarrett Swan of Mount Pleasant, who won his second straight Charleston City Amateur title Sunday.

The tournament is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association. Sixty-three golfers are participating, with the top 32 after Thursday's second round advancing into the match play portion of the tournament beginning Friday and continuing through Sunday with the two finalists meeting in an 18-hole championship beginning at 8 a.m.

Langley, who started on the 10th hole, got to 3-under with birdies at 14, 18 and 2. He made the first of two bogeys on the par-3 fifth, birdied No. 7 and bogeyed No. 9.

Holliday also started on No. 10 and began his round with a double bogey, then reeled off three birdies before bogeying No. 18. He birdied No. 3 and bogey No. 9 to finish at 72.

Tyler also had a double bogey on his scorecard, on his second hole and also bogeyed No. 3 before getting untracked with birdies on 4 and 5. He also made birdies at 12 and 16 and bogeyed 10 and 15.
