A Greenwood man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison in the death of his wife, who was found shot to death in her burning home.
Prosecutor David Stumbo said 55-year-old Darrell Anthony Merritt was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to murder and arson.
Firefighters found the body of 46-year-old Lisa Merritt inside a burning home in November 2012. Investigators said Merritt was not severely burned by the fire, which started in a bedroom, and died from gunshot wounds to the head and chest. Prosecutors said the woman was shot as she lay in her bed.
Authorities said Darrell Merritt fled to a relative's home, saying he had shot his wife and thrown a shotgun out his car's window.
