Flames early Wednesday morning damaged part of the KapStone paper mill in North Charleston, a fire official said.
The blaze was reported around 1 a.m. in the KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp.'s paper-making plant at 5600 Virginia Ave.
Firefighters arrived about six minutes after they got the call, said Bianca Bourbeau, a spokeswoman for the North Charleston Fire Department.
Workers first noticed flames inside one of the manufacturing machines that later spread to the ceiling, Bourbeau said.
Firefighters controlled the flames and stayed at the scene until 6 a.m. to make sure the blaze was extinguished, she said.
The exact cause of the fire wasn't immediately available.
Bourbeau said fire crews from Charleston, St. Andrews, Mount Pleasant and Summerville helped in the operation.
