PIEDMONT, S.C. - Greenville County sheriff's deputies say one of their officers shot and killed a man who was reaching into his waistband and had refused to obey commands to show his hands.
The shooting happened around 7 a.m. Monday at a gas station in Piedmont.
Coroner Parks Evans said 22-year-old Jordan Franklin Browder of Piedmont died at the scene.
A sheriff's spokesman said it turned out that Browder did not have a gun but had refused to cooperate as he approached a deputy.
Master Deputy Jonathan Smith said officers found two guns and a screwdriver with another man who was in the driver's seat of the car Browder was in at the gas station.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting. The deputy has been placed on administrative duty.
