KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Two people have been charged in the death of a 15-month-old Kannapolis girl who investigators say was abused.
John Travis Turner, 30, and Alisha Nicole Carlisle, 20, were arrested Monday and charged with first-degree murder, felony abuse inflicting serious injury and assault with a deadly weapon. It was not clear if they have lawyers.
Carlisle is the Malaya Faith Heun's aunt. Police say Carlisle and her boyfriend were Malaya's sole caretakers at the time of the injuries.
Authorities were called Jan. 19 and the girl was taken to a hospital where she had surgery and was placed on life support. Her mother had life support withdrawn Jan. 22.
The autopsy determined Malaya had several broken ribs, bruises on her head and body, a broken collarbone and intestinal injuries.
Police don't think Christy Heun knew about her daughter's abuse. The mother has not been charged in the case.
