The Charleston area hosts a number of unusual road racing courses, from running the stairs inside North Charleston Coliseum and running from one parking garage to another to finishing at home plate of the RiverDogs baseball stadium.
But the one that might just fly above the others is the Run the Runway 5K, held on the airstrip of the Joint Base Charleston.
The 437th Airlift Wing will host the sixth Annual Run the Runway 5K at the base on June 14, BUT civilians must register online by June 11 at www.jbcharleston.com .
There will be no race day registration.
The registration fee is $15.
Early packet pick-up for civilians will be 2-8 p.m. June 11-13 at the Holiday Inn Express, 7670 Northwoods Boulevard, in North Charleston, SC
Department of Defense civilians, military members and military family members can pick up packets at the Air Base Fitness Center during normal duty hours starting 3 p.m. June 11.
On race day, civilians MUST enter the base via the Commissary/BX Access Gate located about one mile West from the main gate on Dorchester Road. Gates will open at 6 a.m. Civilians will be shuttled to the start line from the Commissary/BX parking lot, and then shuttled from the finish line back to Commissary/BX parking lot.
The last shuttle will leave the Commissary/BX parking lot at 7:20 a.m. sharp.
Department of Defense civilians, military members, and military family members cannot enter via the Commissary/BX Access gate. They should enter at the Dorchester or Rivers gate and park at the Air Base theater.
The event will honor the late Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Thomas Mikolajcik, who died after suffering from ALS.
Race start time is subject to delay based on weather and civilian airline traffic. All runners and walkers must maintain a 20 minute per mile pace.
Race awards for overall fastest male and female, as well as top three finishers in each male and female age group: 10 and under, 11-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over.
All participants and spectators are subject to a background check, if you do not clear the background check, you will not be allowed on base. All property is subject to search while entering, exiting or while on JB Charleston property. Limit items brought on base to speed up entry/exit process. Absolutely NO pets, weapons, knives, explosives, paint, skateboards, bikes, roller blades, glass bottles, alcohol, recreational or commercial vehicles allowed on base.
