COLUMBIA - The first wave of incoming South Carolina freshmen entered college classrooms for the first time at the start of summer school Monday.

Ten players got an early jump on academics - and in the weight room for summer workouts - when the university's first summer semester began. Those players are linebacker Bryson Allen-Williams, tight end Kevin Crosby, cornerback Al Harris Jr., defensive end Blake McClain, defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth, guard Malik Young, quarterback Michael Scarnecchia, and receivers Shaq Davidson and Tyshun Samuel.

Walk-on punter Zack Cimaglia also began classes. He is a redshirt sophomore.

The 10 players represent more than half the rookie class that will play for the Gamecocks this fall. Among them, Allen-Williams, McClain, Harris Jr. and Davidson - and possibly a few more - could compete for early playing time.

South Carolina's second and final summer semester starts July 7.
