COLUMBIA - South Carolina will turn to its closer in the first inning tonight against Maryland.
The Gamecocks will start junior pitcher Joel Seddon, their second-team All-SEC closer. Seddon has 14 saves this season with a .83 ERA and 3-1 record. He also has 53 strikeouts and 10 walks in 43 1/3 innings.
Seddon has not started a game since April 9, 2013 against The Citadel. The then-sophomore allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in two innings, but South Carolina won the game 6-5.
It will be the sixth start of Seddon's career.
South Carolina must beat Maryland twice in the next 24 hours. If the Gamecocks win tonight, they'll meet the Terrapins for the regional title 1 p.m. Monday.
With Seddon starting, his availability for a potential game Monday is unknown.
