Defending champion Jarrett Swan and runner-up Matt Laydon head the field for the 64th Charleston City Amateur golf tournament that begins Friday at Municipal Golf Course.
Swan, who just completed his junior year at Charleston Southern, led from the first round but it took two holes of sudden death before he could dispatch Laydon for the title. Both golfers finished regulation at 8-under-par 208.
Swan led by five shots going to final nine holes but was unable to make any birdies down the stretch. Laydon, meanwhile, shot a 4-under 32 on the final nine including a 10-foot par putt on 18 to force extra holes. He also managed an incredible up-and-down par save on the first playoff hole before Swan birdied the second for the victory.
Swan also went on to hold the 54-hole lead in the Carolinas Amateur at Kiawah Island's Ocean Course before struggling in the final round and finishing 10th.
Tee times run from 7:30-9:20 a.m. and 12:10-2 p.m.
