The passenger of a pickup truck is dead following a wreck in Dorchester County Tuesday morning.
Wesley Adam Hughes, 28, of Bowman was killed on Highway 178 near Quail Run Road, according to Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet.
Hughes was riding in a pickup truck on Highway 178, according to S.C. Highway Patrol officials.
At around 11:30 a.m. the pickup truck failed to yield while turning left in front of a tractor trailer, Highway Patrol officials said.
The tractor-trailer driver told authorities he was driving west on Highway 178 when he saw a pickup truck stop in the eastbound lane, back up and then attempt to make a U-turn in front of him, according to Nisbet.
The big rig's driver said he hit his brakes and blew the horn but was unable to avoid hitting the pickup in the passenger side, Nisbet said.
Hughes was wearing his seat belt, according to Nisbet.
The driver of the semitrailer was not injured.
The back-seat passenger of the pickup was transported to Medical University Hospital, according to Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly.
Wimberly said that passenger's injuries were unknown.
Charges in connection to the incident are pending and the investigation is ongoing, according to Wimberly.
