The body of an Aiken man who went missing after kayaking off the coast of a South Florida state park was discovered Sunday, the Coast Guard said.
Crews with Coast Guard sector Miami received notification at 2:30 p.m. Sunday from a person reporting a body had been found in the water south of Port Everglades. Broward County Sheriff's Office deputies recovered the body from the water a short time later, the Coast Guard said in a news release.
The victim has been identified as David Lemonds, 47, of Aiken. Rangers in the John U. Lloyd Beach State Park reported Lemonds missing on Friday after his truck was seen in the parking lot overnight and several kayakers reported seeing him on Thursday paddling away from the park in a 12-foot yellow ocean kayak.
Coast Guard crews had been searching for Lemonds on Saturday but had not been able to locate him.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials are investigating the incident.
