WADESBORO, N.C. - Authorities say the 5-year-old son of an Anson County deputy found his father's gun and shot himself.
Sheriff Tommy Allen says the boy shot himself in the ear around 1 p.m. Saturday, but was talking to paramedics when he was taken to a children's hospital in Charlotte.
Investigators say the deputy was not on duty and was in another room in their Wadesboro home when the boy shot himself.
Allen says the deputy has been placed on leave as internal investigators and Wadesboro Police try to figure out how the child got the weapon and fired it.
The sheriff did not release the deputy's name.
