A resident of a West Ashley apartment complex suffered minor burns following a fire Sunday morning.
Firefighters responded to Colonial Village at Hampton Pointe apartments on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard at 6:44 a.m. after smoke alarms awoke a resident who found flames inside the second-floor apartment.
The male resident tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire before jumping from a second-floor balcony to the ground, said Capt. Ryan Kunitzer, of the Charleston Fire Department. The man was taken to a local hospital with minor burns and was released Sunday afternoon.
Kunitzer said the fire was primarily contained to two apartments and a portion of the roof in a 16-unit apartment building. Several other apartments sustained varying degrees of smoke and water damage, he said. The American Red Cross Palmetto chapter is assisting six families, including 10 adults, whose apartments were destroyed or damaged in the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
