Shepard Fairey was born on Feb. 15, 1970, in Charleston. He attended the Porter-Gaud School and Rhode Island School of Design, then settled in Los Angeles, where he has furthered his career as a street artist and developed a reputation as a painter of fine art, graphic designer and entrepreneur.
Fairey has straddled the line between commercial and fine art, almost always making reference to real-world issues and integrating aspects of popular culture into his work. The Halsey Institute's "The Insistent Image" is Fairey's first major show in his hometown.
