SOCASTEE - A swing bridge on South Carolina's Grand Strand was closed for parts of two days after a hole developed on the roadway at one end of the span.
The Socastee swing bridge crosses the Intracoastal Waterway and the bridge operator said the hole was 2 feet wide and several feet deep. The hole was reported late Tuesday afternoon.
The bridge was closed to traffic immediately. The state Transportation Department repaired the hole, and the bridge reopened Wednesday afternoon.
The bridge is heavily traveled, although there are other fixed-span crossings of the waterway in the area.
