A 40-year-old Charleston man was shot to death on Nassau Street in peninsular Charleston Saturday, and another man is behind bars facing a murder charge.
Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis released few details about the shooting. He said it took place about 3:45 a.m. at 97 Nassau St. He did not say what led to the shooting.
Donnathian Grant died of a gunshot wound, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kelly Kraus said. Grant had been taken by EMS to Medical University Hospital, where he died at 4:26 p.m., she said. An autopsy was planned for Sunday.
Brandon Horlback, 31, of Nassau Street, is charged with murder, Francis said. Horlback also is charged with one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to jail records. Horlback was being held in the Charleston County jail.
According to court records, both the victim and the suspect had criminal records. Grant had charges pending for criminal domestic violence and for drug possession. Horlback also had pending drug charges.
The slaying was the third homicide reported this year in Charleston and came a little more than 24 hours after a 59-year-old man was fatally shot inside his downtown home.
