Isle of Palms - A 22-year-old man died after being pulled from the surf Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.
A call went out about 1:30 p.m. that a swimmer was in distress, Isle of Palms Fire and Rescue Chief Ann Graham said. Rescuers found that bystanders had pulled the man out of the water near 22nd Avenue and tried to resuscitate him.
He was transported to East Cooper Medical Center in critical condition, Charleston County EMS Director Don Lundy said.
The man died at the hospital, Graham said.
The coroner's office did not immediately release his identity.
The Charleston office of the National Weather Service put out a warning about rip currents off the Isle of Palms after the incident.
