The Charleston-based publisher of Garden & Gun is moving its headquarters in the historic Cigar Factory, it was announced today.

The Southern lifestyle magazine said it's leasing nearly 20,000 square feet of space in the five-story building at East Bay and Columbus streets. It also will be renting some retail space to showcase complementary brands and products highlighted in the seven-year-old national publication.

"It will not only give us much-needed additional office space, and more opportunities to interact with our readers, but also is a great example of urban renewal and conservation that we support as a brand," said Rebecca Darwin, president and CEO of Garden & Gun LLC.

The magazine's owners include Pierre Manigault, chairman of the board of The Post and Courier's parent company, Evening Post Industries Inc., which also has a minority equity interest in the bimonthly publication.

Garden & Gun is the second tenant to lease space in the Cigar Factory, which has been vacant for several years. The first is a unnamed culinary retail destination planned by Charleston-based Indigo Road Restaurant Group. It's taking about 7,500 square feet and is eyeing a fall opening.

A joint venture between Federal Capital Partners of Chevy Chase, Md., and Charleston-based Roi-Tan Investments LLC recently purchased the Cigar Factory for about $24.2 million. It plans to invest about $30 million into a redevelopment of the 244,000-square-foot property.

"Garden & Gun is an incredible company that fits perfectly with our vision for the building," said William Cogswell, one of the local investors in the project. "Their brand and growth trend epitomizes the rise of the new creative industries calling Charleston home."
