ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Tourism managers are trying to persuade visitors across more of the eastern United States to make Asheville their vacation destination.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports Sunday that the city's Convention & Visitors Bureau has expanded television advertising to the South Carolina cities of Charleston and Columbia. Targeted for August are Knoxville and Nashville, Tenn., and Cincinnati, Ohio.

A big goal is to get more overnight and multiple night stays, including mid-week.

The Asheville area gets 9 million visitors a year. They spend $1.5 billion a year and support 23,000 jobs.

Zip line recreation company Navitat CEO Ken Stamps says many of his customers already come from Cincinnati and Nashville.

Asheville is about 270 miles from Charleston.
