Gubernatorial candidate Tom Ervin announced through social media Thursday evening he is also calling on Gov. Nikki Haley to fire DSS Director Lillian Koller.
Ervin - a former judge and state representative - is the independent candidate in the race for governor, who dropped out of the June Republican primary.
In the letter he posted on his Facebook account, Ervin said "another child has needlessly died under your watch." Ervin was referring to a 5-month-old who died April 22 while DSS was trying to locate him.
"These systematic failures of your cabinet appointee continue to undermine public confidence in your ability to lead," wrote Ervin in his post. "Elected officials from both parties have asked you repeatedly to take action. Your failure to act continues to put our most vulnerable children at great risk of bodily harm and, in some tragic cases, death."
A request for comment from Haley's campaign was not immediately returned.
