A SWAT team surrounded a North Charleston apartment building Wednesday afternoon after officers found a door kicked in and shell casings on the floor of a nearby apartment.
Officers were sent to Brackenbrook Apartments off Dorchester Road about 2:30 p.m. after a report of shots fired. Officers found the busted door and several shell casings on the floor, North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said. Nobody was in the apartment. Witnesses told officers they saw several men running from the residence.
At least two dozen officers, including the SWAT team, then surrounded a unit in Wedgewood Apartments, an adjacent complex on Apartment Boulevard.
Hunley Park and Lambs elementary schools were placed on lockdown, according to Charleston County School District spokesman Jason Sakran.
Shortly before 4 p.m., a man was taken into custody. The man was not immediately charged, Pryor said.
