Don't look for wholesale changes at this year's Charleston Home + Design Show on Daniel Island - and for good reason.
It's got a flexible yet popular formula that attracts thousands of people looking to frame a home or improve on the one they have, all without leaving the inland island.
You could dub the 2014 version "Same Song, Second Verse." Or, "If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It." How about "Why Mess with Success?" They all fit.
Since being launched three years ago, the weekend show lures shoppers to the Family Circle Cup tennis center Saturday and Sunday to check out how to redo their kitchen or add a sunroom.
Here's how organizers describe the show on its website at www.danielislandhomeshow.com.
"The Charleston Home + Design Show on Daniel Island is a rain-or-shine event. Regardless of what Mother Nature is doing, our show is a go. Each of our 75 vendors - lining the concourse - are covered by the grand Family Circle Stadium seating, so there is no need for an umbrella or sunscreen unless you'd like to soak up some rays while enjoying our Food Truck Row."
According to backers, free parking is available on-site at Family Circle Cup Stadium and on Seven Farms Drive. And additional and overflow parking is available in the grass lot across from Publix on Island Park Drive.
Also on the opening day, attendees can spend from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. strolling through seven custom built homes, including one new residence for this year, and talking to the architects and builders. The home tour starts at the island's Smythe Park neighborhood and continues through its Daniel Island Park sector north of Interstate 526.
"It is very successful, the home and design and the Daniel Island luxury home tour," says Tim Barkley, publisher of the show's sponsor Charleston Home + Design magazine. "The past two years, this was the smashing success." Organizers even put a cap on the home tour at 400 patrons to avoid overcrowding.
"They both have a lot of synergy," Barkley says. "People who are taking the tour, very often they are getting ready to build a home. They may or may not have chosen a builder."
At the same time, organizers have lined up dozens of vendors that can help with shoppers' questions. "The people walking through get inspiration for their own home from subcontractors," Barkley says. A number of specialists are likely to be stationed at the homes, which can encourage homeowners to return to the Family Circle Cup venue after the tour to clinch house improvement deals such as crafting "a really nice staircase or an outdoor kitchen," he says.
The experts are realistic enough to resist customers' "HGTV mentality," he says, where they expect their homes to be transformed in 30 minutes.
Barkley does see one change this year: show presenters are more upbeat about the housing market as a whole.
"I've noticed vendors have finally gained enough (business) to go, 'this is not a fluke. We are not still bouncing along the bottom.'"
There are two direct routes from downtown Charleston to Daniel Island. Take Interstate 26 west to I-526 and head toward Mount Pleasant. Go about seven miles to the Daniel Island exits. Take a right to the island and make a left on Seven Farms Drive. The Family Circle Cup center is on the right. Alternatively, drive over the Ravenel Bridge and stay in the left lanes to Mount Pleasant, follow U.S. Highway 17 North to I-526, and take a left onto the expressway. Exit right onto Daniel Island and continue on Seven Farms Drive to the center.
