TARBORO, N.C.-- Authorities say an off-duty Tarboro police officer is dead after the van he was driving collided with an N.C. Department of Transportation excavator truck in Edgecombe County.
Chief Damon Williams said 46-year-old Charles Johnson, a 24-year veteran of the force, was killed Tuesday. A statement from the N.C. Highway Patrol said the accident occurred just outside of Tarboro on N.C. 111 around 8:49 a.m.
Spokeswoman Jennifer Garifo said the driver of the truck was shaken but uninjured. He was identified as 29-year-old William Allen Harrell II of Macclesfield.
Garifo said Harrell will undergo the required medical screening.
The patrol investigating the accident, and NCDOT says it will conduct its own probe as well.
Williams said a fund is being established at a local bank for Johnson's widow and two children.
