Just in time for tax day, a Sullivan's Island mobile technology firm is rolling out a feature for car owners that will sort their business mileage from their personal mileage.
Zubie's main product is a device that plugs into the on-board diagnostics port and compiles data that can be viewed on a smartphone.
Among other functions, it's designed to detect engine trouble, track a vehicle's location, monitor driving habits and estimate repair bills. A year of service, including the plug-in tool, runs about $100.
The company's new "Trip Tagging" mileage sorting option was announced today. It's available from the iTunes and Google Play apps stores.
The free add-on feature allows Zubie subscribers to separate their personal trips from their business trips. Customers will receive reports summarizing their driving history, as well as information about deducting business mileage from their taxes.
"Whether you're a sole proprietor whose car is a vital part of your business, or someone who has an occasional need to track mileage when using a personal car for work, it's a simple, pain-free way of tracking," Zubie CEO Tim Kelly said in a statement.
Formerly known as GreenLight Connectivity Solutions, Zubie was spun out of retail giant Best Buy and has offices locally and in Minneapolis. Kelly is a former senior executive at Sprint's wireless unit.
The company raised $10 million in financing round late last year to accelerate its growth. That's on top of $8 million that investors put into Zubie over the summer.
Part of the company's strategy is to seek tie-ins with other industries. For example, auto insurers are interested in using the analytics to offer discounts and other incentives to safe drivers who opt in and volunteer their information. Also, dealerships could use the data to calculate more precise values for the used cars they buy and sell.
