Authorities responded late Sunday to a railroad in Goose Creek after a man was fatally struck by a train.

The wreck occurred around 10 p.m. on the tracks at Hollywood Boulevard and U.S. Highway 52, according to a Goose Creek police report. The intersection is about a mile west of Felkel Field, a Goose Creek recreational complex and baseball park.

An Amtrak employee told police that the train was headed north at 79 mph when a man walked onto the tracks, faced the train and crossed his arms.

The man did not attempt to avoid being hit, the employee told police.

Authorities located the man's body about 240 feet from where he was struck.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said the death has been ruled a suicide.

A Goose Creek police report identified him as 34-year-old John Edward Caffrey of Goose Creek.
