Deputies quickly made an arrest early Friday after a 31-year-old man was shot to death near the Dorchester community.
Chief Deputy Sam Richardson of the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said authorities were called about 6:15 a.m. to 143 Iris Lane.
The location is on a dirt-surfaced street in a rural area west of Harleyville.
The deputies found one man dead, and they placed another in custody, Richardson said.
Stevie Elmore was jailed on a murder charge, Richardson said. The chief deputy did not immediately provide an address or an age for Elmore.
Detectives were working to confirm details about what happened, Richardson said, and no further information was immediately available.
The victim was 31-year-old Mark Anthony Daniel Sr. of Academy Road in St. George, County Coroner Chris Nisbet said. Daniel's cause of death was still pending because an autopsy had not been completed.
Deputies said he had been shot.
Daniel's death is the first homicide reported this year in the general population of Dorchester County.
An inmate was fatally stabbed in early March at Lieber Correctional Institution, a state prison near Ridgeville.
