John Moore of Charleston has won The Post and Courier's Golden Pen award for February for his letter to the editor, "SPA should follow its own advice."
Mr. Moore was inspired to write the letter after seeing a sign (shown here) at a State Ports Authority warehouse on Concord Street.
Mr. Moore wrote:
"I imagine this sign was meant for trucks, but actually, if the captain of one of the cruise ships were to have an eagle eye, and surely they all do in keeping with the great tradition of ships and Charleston being trained to look out for man o' war and pirates, the captain would read this sign.
"And I thought, wow, the state of South Carolina and the city of Charleston do care for the health and well being of their citizens.
"Then I took control of my senses and thought, no, that would be laughable."
Golden Pen winners are invited to an annual luncheon with the editorial staff.
