CofC 5, Towson 3
TOWSON, MD. - Carl Wise tallied a game-winning RBI single in the seventh inning and Chase Henry pitched three innings of shutout relief as College of Charleston bested Towson to win the series on Saturday.
The Cougars (20-10, 3-2) won their first CAA series of the season, while Towson (14-11, 0-2) is still searching for its first conference win.
CofC's offense reached double digits in hits for the second straight game as Charleston knocked 12 hits and earned six free passes off the Towson pitching staff.
Bailey Ober (5-2) tallied his fourth quality start of the season as Charleston's starting pitching staff have now made five quality starts in the last six games. Ober allowed three runs on six hits through six innings of work. He struck out four and walked one batter.
Chase Henry rebounded from a short appearance on Friday by going three innings and shutting out the Tigers with four strikeouts for his second save of the year.
Towson's Bruce Zimmerman (3-3) suffered the loss for the Tigers after allowing a leadoff walk in the seventh inning to Champ Rowland who eventually scored in the inning for CofC's game-winning run. Zimmerman struck out five batters and was tagged for four runs on eight hits.
Brandon Glazer had a strong showing in his home state for the second game in a row. Glazer tallied three hits and drove in two runs. Wise finished with two RBIs on one hit with two walks, while Gunnar Heidt knocked a double and two singles to score two runs.
For the second game in a row, Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Sophomore Morgan Phillips led off with a double to right centerfield on the first pitch of the inning. With one out, freshman Bradley Jones blooped a single to left, scoring Phillips with the first run of the game.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Tigers wasted no time getting back in the game. Senior Kurt Wertz led off with a walk and then junior Peter Bowles lined a two-run homer over the left field fence to put the Tigers ahead, 2-1.
CofC responded in the third inning with a leadoff single from Blake Butler and a double down the right-field line from Heidt. Wise hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Butler and then Glazer lined a ball into left to score Heidt and help CofC retake the lead, 3-2.
Bowles continued his power hitting for Towson with a leadoff double in the fourth inning. After advancing to third on a groundout, he came home to tie the game again with an RBI single from Pat Fitzgerald.
Both pitchers settled in until the seventh inning when CofC loaded the bases with a walk to Rowland, double from Ryan Welke and intentional walk to Heidt. Wise came through with an RBI single to give Charleston the 4-3 lead.
CofC added an insurance run in the ninth off an RBI single from Glazer, and Henry worked around a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth to win the game for CofC.
Nathan Helvey will take the mound for the Cougars on Sunday as CofC goes for its third sweep of the season. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
