SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- A former Spartanburg County employee has been sentenced to six months of house arrest after she admitted embezzling $127,000 over nearly four years.
Cynthia Brower was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to an embezzlement charge. A judge also ordered her to pay restitution.
Brower resigned last year from her job as a senior accountant in Spartanburg County's finance department.
County Administrator Katherine O'Neill says the theft was discovered in June while Brower was recuperating after a car wreck. An employee filling in for her noticed a discrepancy between the amount of a check Brower deposited and the amount it was recorded to be.
O'Neill says Brower was siphoning cash from the deposits and forging deposit slips and receipts to ensure they matched. Brower apologized in court for her actions.
