A man has been arrested after an armed robbery in downtown Charleston early Thursday morning.
A woman told police she was entering her apartment on South Street about 12:45 a.m. when a man with a gun walked up and demanded money, police spokesman Charles Francis said. She refused and sprayed him in the face with pepper spray she had on her key ring.
The woman said the man ran into the back yard but returned and grabbed her purse before running away.
Michael Nickens, 24, of Sequoia Street was arrested and charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He was being held in the Charleston County jail Thursday.
