Georgetown County's former economic development director has been arrested on embezzlement charges.
Wayne Emerson Gregory Jr., 36, of Autumn Circle in Columbia is accused of diverting more than $100,000 from the county for his own use, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office was notified of financial irregularities about a month ago. An investigation revealed that funds had been diverted between January 2010 and September 2013, when Gregory was economic development director, according to the Sheriff's Office. Investigators said Gregory used a county purchasing card to misappropriate money.
Deputies, SLED agents and Columbia police officers carried out a search warrant at Gregory's apartment in Columbia Tuesday and then arrested him, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Gregory was working as business recruiter for the city of Columbia when he was arrested, according to The State. He started with the city in September and was fired Tuesday. City Manager Teresa Wilson ordered an internal review of his work in Columbia.
Gregory was also project manager for the Greenville Area Development Corp. before starting with Georgetown in 2005, according to The State.
