For nearly three decades, Carolyn Rivera has served as a foster parent for more than 80 children ages 18 and younger.
Now, the North Charleston resident has been named the 2014 Foster Parent of the Year by the South Carolina Foster Parent Association.
Rivera's licensing supervisor called her a "go-to parent," always willing to help.
Of the children she has cared for, Rivera has adopted three and raised them along with her biological children. She wants to adopt two more.
Rivera also is a role model to other foster and adoptive parents in her role as president of the Charleston County Foster Parent Association.
The South Carolina Foster Parent Association works statewide to bring together foster parents, agency representatives and others to promote cooperation and communication and enhance children's lives.
