Country Club of Charleston member Brennen King and Michael Johnson, a red-shirt sophomore at Auburn, share the lead at the mid-point of the 66th Azalea Invitational golf tournament at the Country Club of Charleston.

King, a former Clemson golfer, posted a 6-under-par 65 Friday while Johnson had a 66. Their 36-hole total is 135, 6 under par.

M.J. Maguire, a junior at the University of North Florida, is third at 66-136 with Edward Figueroa of Naples, Fla., fourth at 71-137. First-round leader John Patterson of Okatie shares fifth at 138 with Keith Mitchell of Athens, Ga., Grayson Murray of Raleigh, N.C., and Hans Reimers of Lake Oswego, Ore.

The round of the day was a 7-under 64 by Clemson sophomore Miller Capps, who is staying with the King family during the Azalea. Capps made 7 birdies on his way to a back-nine 28 and improved his first-day score by 12 strokes.

King, who graduated from Clemson in 2001 and joined the Country Club of Charleston when he moved here in 2006, said the key was putting.

"I'm a streaky putter. Rock Dangerfield always caddies for me and he reads the greens better than me," King said.

King birdied 2, 6 and 9 for a front-nine 33, made his only bogey on the par-3 11th, then reeled off four straight birdies starting at 14. The final birdie, on the par-3 17th, was 50 to 60 feet King said.

Johnson followed King's formula, making seven birdies and two bogeys. He shot 33 on both nines with birdies at 1, 5, 9, 11, 13, 17 and 18 and bogeys at 10 and 16.

Tee times Saturday start at 7:36 a.m. with the leaders starting at 1:54 p.m. The field will be cut to the low 60 and ties for Sunday's final round.
