Clemson 3-7, 1-1
COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Steve Wilkerson's three-run homer in the first inning and Chris Okey's two-run homer in the fifth inning lifted No. 20 Clemson to a 7-1 win over Maryland at Bob Smith Stadium in the second game of a doubleheader Friday night.
The Tigers (17-9, 8-3 ACC) swept the doubleheader and took a 2-0 series lead over the Terrapins (16-8, 5-6 ACC).
Matthew Crownover (5-2) earned the win by pitching his first career complete game. Maryland starter Mike Shawaryn (5-1) suffered his first loss of the year.
The Tigers totaled 13 hits in the contest, as Wilkerson led the way by going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and three RBIs.
Shane Kennedy went 4-for-4 with a homer and the go-ahead, run-scoring triple in the ninth inning to lead Clemson to a 3-1 win in the first game.
Kennedy's solo homer in the second inning was the game's lone run until pinch-hitter Michael Montville hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to tie the score. But Kennedy came through with a triple in the ninth inning to score Wilkerson and later came home on Jay Baum's sacrifice fly.
Daniel Gossett (3-0) pitched 8.0 strong innings to earn the win. He gave up eight hits, one run and one walk with six strikeouts. Matt Campbell recorded his fifth save of the year. Reliever Brandon Casas (0-1) suffered the loss for Maryland.
The series concludes Saturday at 2 p.m.
