John Patterson of Okatie made seven birdies and only one bogey Thursday to take a one-stroke lead in the Azalea Invitational amateur golf tournament at the Country Club of Charleston.

Patterson, a former member of the Buy.com Tour and now the director of marketing at Chechessee Creek Club, shot 65 to edge Mercer's Hans Reimers and Edward Figueroa by one stroke in the 72-hole tournament. Michael Johnson of Birmingham, Ala., and Parker Derby of Columbus, Ga., are tied for fourth with opening rounds of 69.

Country Club of Charleston member Brennan King, a former Clemson golfer, is part of a 10-player logjam tied for sixth at 1-under 70. Defending champion Austin Langdale of Townville is tied for 23rd after a 1-over 72.

Patterson was 7-under over an 11-hole stretch, starting with a run of three birdies to finish off a front-nine 33. He birdied the 12th and added another string of three birdies starting at the 15th.

Reimers made five birdies and two bogeys for a front-nine 33. He played the back nine bogey-free with birdies at 12 and 15.

Figueroa made four birdies and one bogey on the front nine and had three birdies against one bogey on the back nine.

The tournament continues through Sunday, with the field cut to the low 60 and ties after the third round. Tee times Friday and Saturday run from 7:35 a.m.-2:03 p.m., with play scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Sunday and the leaders teeing off at approximately 10:10 a.m.
