MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Myrtle Beach is seeking to annex hundreds of acres along the road that millions of visitors travel each year to visit the beach resort.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that the city council has voted to annex almost 600 acres between the city and the Intracoastal Waterway along U.S. 501.
Much of the land is commercial property but it also includes two subdivisions. City leaders say the businesses in the area have benefited from city services and improvements. But city officials say because those properties are in Horry County, they don't pay their fair share of the services.
Those who live in the annexation area would have to approve the idea in a referendum.
