COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A South Carolina inmate has been charged in the death of his cellmate.
The State Law Enforcement Division said Tuesday 31-year-old William Kennedy Robertson had been charged with voluntary manslaughter.
In January, authorities say Robertson hit his cellmate, 57-year-old Theodore Evans, with a broom. Evans died after hitting his head on the wall and toilet of their cell.
Police said Robertson and Evans shared a cell at Evans Correctional Institution in Bennettsville. Robertson is serving 15 years for drug and armed robbery charges. Information on Evans' conviction and sentence was not immediately available.
Police did not say if Robertson had an attorney on the manslaughter charge. Authorities say he gave them written and oral statements about what happened during the fight.
