Radford 18, CSU 4
Radford piled up a season-high 23 hits to hand Charleston Southern a loss Saturday night at CSU Ballpark.
Radford improved to 13-9 overall and 4-1 in Big South play, while CSU fell to 14-10 and 1-4. The teams play the final game of the series on Sunday at 2 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
Radford scored 10 runs in the sixth inning to blow open a 6-1 game. Starter Dylan Nelson (4-0) worked into the sixth and scattered nine CSU hits to remain perfect. He struck out four.
Catcher Andrew Widell was the bright spot for the Bucs. He went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Left fielder Nick Berry and third baseman Alex Tomasovich each had two hits for the Bucs.
Bucs' starter Andrew Tomasovich (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season. He worked four innings and surrendered four earned runs.
Radford struck first in its opening at-bat. Hunter Higgerson's RBI single scored Josh Reavis as the Highlanders took a 1-0 lead. Radford had three hits in the inning, but Tomasovich kept the damage to a minimum.
CSU threatened in the first with singles from Chase Shelton and Nick Berry, but Radford starter Dylan Nelson struck out Zack Hagaman to end the threat.
The Highlanders added two runs in the second on four more singles. Aaron Scoville and Reavis both had RBI singles to build the lead to 3-0.
Second baseman Josh Gardiner was 5-for-5 for Radford and scored four times. He had a two-run double in Radford's big sixth inning and hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Higgerson added a two-run home run for the Highlanders.
