COLUMBIA - Repairs to the boardwalk at Congaree National Park damaged during February's winter storm begin in April and will continue into the summer.

The State newspaper reported Thursday that park officials say three major sections were knocked out by falling trees during the storm.

Funds had been approved before the storm to replace an entire section from Weston Lake back to the Bluff Trail, so officials decided to move ahead with replacing the damaged areas as well as the entire walk at the same time.

The work means visitors will not be able to complete the full, 2.4-mile boardwalk loop. Hikers can walk a smaller loop along the dirt Sims Trail instead. Officials say there is a small downed tree on that trail, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs.
